One in ten Cypriots suffers from diabetes, the health ministry said in a press release on Wednesday to mark World Diabetes day on November 14.Diabetes is a “silent disease” and is one of the ten main diseases to cause disabilities in adults, leading to increased death risk.Diabetes is divided into Type 1, which occurs mainly among the young, and Type 2, which is often described as adult’ diabetes.“But recently it has been observed that Type 2 is not only rapidly increasing, but has been diagnosed in children as well,” the announcement said.It adds that obesity, unhealthy lifestyles, and lack of exercise are linked with the appearance of Type 2 diabetes.
According to the World Health Organisation, it said, 366 million people around the world currently suffer from the disorder. Unless effective intervention measures are taken, the number is expected to rise by 53 per cent by 2035, reaching 592 million people. The ministry said diabetes clinics, manned with doctors and nurses especially trained, operate in all public hospitals. A referral protocol is also in place, “that ensures equal and immediate accessibility of patients to secondary care diabetes clinics” reports Cyprus Mail
