The Romanian PM knee surgery saga

Premier Victor Ponta was hospitalized in a clinic in Turkey in order to undergo surgery on the knee he injured during a recent basketball game. Because of this reason, the Premier’s lawyer showed up at the National Anticorruption Directorate (DNA) on Monday morning where she asked the postponement of the Premier’s hearing in the Rovinari-Turceni case in which PSD Senator Dan Sova is also investigated. Ponta should have been heard by prosecutors at 10 a.m.

Premier Victor Ponta underwent a medical check-up on his knee on Thursday, after suffering an injury during a basketball game. On the basis of the MRI the doctors established that the Premier has torn ligaments and recommended surgery.

The Premier injured his leg during a basketball game on May 25, right before his trip to Tirana where he attended the summit of the South-East European Cooperation Process (SEECP).

Romanian Prime Minister Victor Ponta will resume his activity in his capacity as prime minister from Thursday.

Ponta announced this in a written statement addressed to President Klaus Iohannis on Wednesday, saying that he was returning to office after the causes preventing him from exercising his official duties have been removed.

Prime Minister Victor Ponta is progressing favourably after the knee surgery, Bucharest-Based Central Military Emergency University Hospital announced.

“In accordance with the provisions of the Romanian Supreme Defence Council’s Resolution no. 166/2006, with the subsequent modifications and completions and in accordance with the Methodological Norms adopted for its enforcement, Dr. Carol Davila Central Military Emergency University Hospital has been authorised to communicate the following information regarding an evaluation of Prime Minister Victor Ponta’s state of health: today, July 9, at around 1 p.m., Premier Victor Ponta came to the Orthopedic and Traumatology Clinic of the hospital in view of a specialised check aimed to evaluate his state of health and set the therapeutic conduct and the protocol for the post-surgery medical recuperation”, the hospital said in a release to AGERPRES.

It added that following the check, it was found that the patient was progressing “favourably” after the surgery and his recovery was going “within the normal parameters”. The patient is not allowed to stand on his operated-on leg or bend the knee at an angle larger than 90 degrees.

Ponta must observe a daily programme of medical gymnastics, physiotherapy and kinetic therapy according to the international standards and undergo orthopedic check in 21 days or when needed.
