Turkey and Georgia discuss medical tourism cooperation

A workshop was held in Tbilisi under the auspices of the International Association for Medical Services. The representatives of the health care system and the leading clinics of Turkey attended it.

Visitturkeyforhealthcare Platform was the organizer of the workshop.

The representatives of the Ministries of Health of Georgia and Adjara, Medical University, leading central and regional clinics attended the workshop.

Turkish doctors have presented their health care system and the reforms undertaken in this area over the last ten years.

A group of Turkish doctors will arrive in Georgia in the near future as part of the project, director of the platform, Dr. Dursun Aydin said.

He also said that the Turkish language courses will open for the Georgian doctors who do not have jobs. This is an opportunity for them to get a job in Turkish private hospitals.

Turkey has improved its medical system to a level equal to Europe and the USA over the last ten years. Some 3,700 Georgian citizens were treated in Turkey in 2012. Their number reached 6,000 in 2013.

The rapid growth observed in Turkey’s medical tourism in recent years has placed the country among the top 10 healthcare destinations globally, according to advisory firm Deloitte’s 2014 Global Life Sciences Outlook.
Assessing healthcare and pharmaceutical markets by country, the report also foresees a growth of 8.8 percent in pharma sales in Turkey between 2013 and 2017, reaching a volume of USD 19 billion. The report also advises healthcare providers in Turkey to pursue long-term strategies and not focus on maximizing short-term profits given the fast-changing market conditions.
According to earlier reports, Turkey welcomed 250,000 medical tourists in 2012, a remarkable increase from the 74,000 patients in 2008.
Turkey is running a multi-pronged health tourism strategy to attract more foreign visitors, including medical, spa and healthcare for elderly and disabled people. Foreigners are also seeking medical care in dentistry, optometry, orthopedics, plastic surgery and many other branches. There are over 1,600 thermal springs in the country known for their healing and revitalizing effects for those who seek alternative methods of treatment.

Planning to introduce tax-free healthcare zones specifically tailored for foreign patients, Turkey’s Ministry of Health intends to increase the number of medical tourists to 500,000 by 2015 and to 2 million by 2023. IIT

Yeni Safak, the conservative turkish newspaper reported – Turkey’s rise in world health tourism will double the revenue the country makes from treating foreign patients in 2014, according to Minister of Health, Mehmet Muezzinoglu. “Russians and citizens of the Turkic republics top the list of foreign patients who prefer Turkey. We aim to double this year’s USD 2.5 billion medical tourism income in 2014”, Muezzinoglu said, assessing his Ministry’s yearly performance.

“Beginning in 2014, two successive 5-year plans will be put into action to further improve Turkey’s status as a regional healthcare hub that can serve the surrounding region of about a billion people”, Turkey’s Minister of Health noted. Hosting a large number of world-class healthcare facilities and internationally accredited hospitals, Turkey welcomed some 270,000 foreign patients seeking high-quality and affordable treatment in 2012, up from 74,000 in 2008. Planning to introduce tax-free healthcare zones specifically tailored for foreign patients, Turkey’s Ministry of Health intends to increase the number of medical tourists to 500,000 by 2015 and 2 million by 2023.
