Surge in adolescent alcohol use in Spain
Survey of students shows more drinking, less cannabis and cocaine use
NEARLY 84% of adolescents aged 14 to 18 have drunk alcohol, up nine points from two years ago, with the rise especially pronounced in 14- and 15-year-olds, according to a new report. However, the use of cannabis and cocaine has decreased.
The results of the Survey on Drug Use in Secondary School Students (ESTUDES) for 2012-13 were presented last week by the government delegate for the National Drugs Plan, Francisco Babín.
At age 14, 63% of students said they had drunk alcohol within the last year, a figure that by age 16 rose to 84%. Overall, 81.9% of adolescents said they had drunk alcohol within the last year, while around 50% had drunk to intoxication. Three in 10 said they had drunk to intoxication within the last month.
