Suicides represented a third of the violent deaths for which forensic autopsies were made in specialized units in 2013 in Romania. Over 80 percent of those who chose to take their lives were men, according to a report of the National Institute of Forensic Medicine, cited by local Mediafax.

A total of 2,721 people committed suicide in 2013, slightly down from 2,753 cases recorded the year before.

According to the report, the most common violent deaths were suicides by hanging, poisoning (voluntary intoxication) and jumping from high altitude.

Taking into account the period between 1996 and 2013, the highest number of suicides, namely 3,967, was recorded in 2000.
