Hungary Health Workers Continue to Go to Work Abroad

Budapest, August 7 (MTI) – The flow of Hungarian health-care workers to abroad continued in the first half of 2014 and the number of young doctors seeking employment increased compared with last year, business daily Vilaggazdasag said today.

A total of 514 doctors and dentists, and another 257 nurses and midwives applied for certificates to work abroad in January-June, the paper said, citing figures by the health-care public administration office (EEKH) that issues the certificates.

In the full year of 2013, the total number of doctors and dentists going to work abroad was 1,218 and of nurses 555, the paper said.

Over the past seven and a half years, more than 8,000 doctors and dentists, and over 2,500 nurses and midwives have left Hungary’s health-care sector to work in another country, it said.

Their most preferred destination has been Germany, followed by Britain and Austria.

According to earlier reports, the main reason for their departure is higher wages.
