Budapest- Waiting lists for surgeries are getting slightly shorter compared to October last year, daily Magyar Nemzet said today, citing figures from the national health insurance fund.
The paper said that the longest lists are for cataract removal, knee and hip replacement surgeries, for which a combined 34,430 Hungarians are waiting in line.
The number of people on the waiting list for cataract removal has dropped by 150 from 18,263 at the end of October. Some 8,900 are waiting for knee replacement and 7,267 for hip replacement, the paper said.
The figures show that more than a thousand people are waiting for cardiac treatment, gallstone removal and hernia surgery.
The paper said that state secretary for health Gabor Zombor said earlier this week that 6 billion forints (EUR 19m) would be made available as of January 1 to further reduce waiting time. This would mean in the case of minor surgeries two to three months and in the case of major surgeries six months, he said.
