How many Italian children are diagnosed with type 1 diabetes?
In Italy, 18,000 children and adolescents are diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. They are supported by a network of 60 pediatric diabetes centers, evenly distributed throughout the country. To be noted that, even though many of them do not feel embarrassed or discriminated because of their condition, about 1 parent of 2 (47%) said they had to stop working in order to take care of their diabetic children and 33% of mothers and fathers reported a significant negative economic impact on the family budget.
These are some of the findings from the international survey DAWN Youth, released in the first edition of the Italian Barometer Paediatric Diabetes Forum, held in Rome and organized by the Italian Barometer Diabetes Observatory (IBDO) Foundation, the University of Rome “Tor Vergata” and the Italian Society of Pediatric Endocrinology and Diabetology (SIEDP).
