According to the data published by the National Institute of Health Development, Estonian health care expenditures in 2013 were 1.12 billion euros.
The Estonian Health Insurance Fund accounted for 66.4 percent of the total health spending. Private households paid for 22.3 percent and the government for 9.5 percent of the costs.
The Estonian Health Insurance Fund spent 270 million euros on the treatment of hospitalized patients, 152.4 million on medical and diagnostic services and 103.4 million on drug compensations.
Private households spend most on prescription drugs – 61.6 million euros in total – and nearly as much on dental care. Over-the-counter drugs accounted for another 40.7 million euros.
Most of the government expenditures went to transport and rescue, including the ambulance service.
The total health spending was found using the methodology of the international System of Health Accounts (SHA) 2011 instead of the previously used SHA 1.0. The results are, therefore, not comparable to those of the previous years.
