Croatia: Medical chamber’s head calls for stopping emigration of doctors
The newly-elected president of the Croatian Medical Chamber (HLK), Trpimir Goluza, said at a conference in Groznjan on Saturday that one of the most important goals should be stopping the emigration of Croatian doctors and creating conditions for the return of those who had left the country.
Some of the reasons why doctors are leaving the country to work abroad are noncompliance with legal regulations and European directives on working hours, inappropriate working conditions, salaries that are inadequate when compared to salaries of doctors working abroad, and problems with promotion and accomplishment of professional ambitions, Goluza said.
He added that the HLK expected of the next government to sign a collective work agreement for doctors, improve their working conditions, make it possible for doctors to have additional jobs, provide for their further training and define clear criteria for their promotion, as well as envisage financial bonuses for doctors wishing to work in smaller towns.
Reforming the health system requires a broad social consensus, Goluza said.
Speaking at the conference, entitled “Media and Health”, at which representatives of four political parties presented their health platforms, Health Minister Sinisa Varga said that one of the goals of the current government’s health policy in the next five years was to extend life expectancy by two years.
