Child in care mystery death
A 10-week-old baby died at the end of August after being taken from his intoxicated mother and placed in an orphanage.
The tragic incident took place in Rzeszow, the day after officers turned up at the house following an anonymous call and found the woman in care of her two-year-old son, her friend’s two-year-old daughter and baby Bartek.
“When we initially arrived she was not there as she had gone shopping,” says Rzeszow Police Commissioner Pawel Miedlar. “An ambulance was called and the children were taken in for examination. It was decided that the children had to stay in a care home.”
Initial examinations however found all three to all be in sound health. “The health of the children, including the two-month old boy, was identified as good,” Irena Marszalek, Deputy Director of the Social Welfare Centre in Rzeszow, told Gazeta Wyborcza. However, at around 15.00 – less than an hour later – doctors noticed worrying signals. “The boy was sleeping but he was pale and had problems breathing.”
At present, the cause of death is still unknown and while the autopsy took place on Tuesday, it may take up to a month for the results to come back.
The mother is now under investigation and the District Prosecutor has not ruled out manslaughter.
