Bribery Still Part of the Greek Health Sector
Up to 55.2% of the money paid by patients in Greek health sector establishments is not declared to the tax authorities. According to the General Inspector of Public Administration Leandros Rakintzis, one in three Greeks are still bribing doctors in order to get better services.
It was estimated that one third of doctors in Greece demand a “bribery,” while another third accept whatever the patient can offer them.
The amounts range from 200 euros for childbirth or a simple eye surgery to over 5,000 euros for a major surgery.
Since 2007, 428 complaints have been filed against ESY doctors, while another 31 cases involve IKA doctors since 2009.
According to a study conducted by Ioannis Kyriopoulos briberies in the public and private health sector have increased in the first years of the crisis, between 2009 and 2013. The researcher also noted that “briberies” include overcharges, formal (private hospitals) or informal (public hospitals)
