Hungary: Migrants diagnosed with infectious diseases

Budapest, August 13 (MTI) – A number of infectious diseases have been detected among migrants entering Hungary, daily Napi Gazdasag said on Thursday.

Several migrants have been diagnosed with diseases such as syphilis, hepatitis B and C, HIV, typhoid and paratyphoid fever, the office of the chief medical officer told the paper. It has still to be concluded if migrants pose a public health risk, as only registered asylum-seekers are screened, Napi Gazdasag said.

The Hungarian health authorities carried out more than 2,700 screenings over the first six months of the year, 51 of which produced positive results. There have been two incidents of a large number of migrants having to be taken to hospital after showing signs of infection. The first case involved about 50 migrants who were hospitalised in Budapest. Most of them were released almost immediately while two underwent further testing but were not diagnosed with any infection. As for the second case, 18 migrant children were hospitalised in Szeged, in southern Hungary. Of them, one was diagnosed with rotavirus and the others with bacterial infections, the office told the paper. Medical tests carried out on asylum-seekers are regulated by the government decree on asylum.
