Cigarettes and alcohol help a deadly killer
Cigarettes and alcohol help a deadly killer
In Italy, 80% of head and neck cancers are caused by alcohol and cigarettes. Just think, for instance, that the risk of developing cancer of the oral cavity, pharynx and esophagus is three-fold higher in people who drink alcohol than in teetotalers. In particular, the larynx is the organ that is affected more frequently and, each year, this tumor affects 12,000 Italian citizens.
An increasing number also because of the more and more common inappropriate behaviors, such as smoking and alcohol abuse. The good news, however, is that as much as 60% of these cancer patients can be healed. And if the disease is diagnosed at an early stage, this percentage rises to 90%. A huge step forward, as highlighted during a seminar of the Italian Society of Otorhinolaryngology and Neck Surgery (SIOeChCf), when you consider that in the early 90s, only 50% of patients succeeded in defeating the disease.
