EU states owe Hungary billions for medical treatment of foreigners, says health fund

European Union member states owe Hungary’s National Health Insurance Fund (OEP) 5.2 billion forints (EUR 17.4m) for treatments received by foreign patients in Hungary, the OEP said on Wednesday.

The amount Hungary owes to EU member states for treatments Hungarians received abroad is roughly the same amount, and work on settling the accounts is steadily under way, the OEP’s press office said in a statement.

The OEP keeps an itemised list of treatments received by foreigners, the office added, in response to the president of the State Audit Office’s remarks earlier this week that OEP does not keep proper records of outstanding bills.
