Patients moved from eight Athens hospitals being downgraded to health centers

The process of moving patients from eight Athens hospitals that are to be downgraded to health centers as part of a healthcare overhaul began on Wednesday.

Some of the staff from the hospitals are to be transferred as well as the government looks to meet the bailout target of pushing 25,000 public sector workers into a mobility scheme by the end of the year.

Employees said they will continue protests against the measure.

“Even in war zones, the evacuation of hospitals is a shocking thing,” said the president of the hospital doctors’ union, Dimitris Varnavas.

The eight hospitals in question will provide fewer services under the new scheme and demands on the capital’s remaining hospitals will be stepped up.
