Free prescription drugs for Polish pensioners 75 and over

Polish pensioners aged 75 and over will be entitled to a range of free prescription drugs from Thursday under a new law.

The new rules, allowing senior citizens to get free medicines from a list issued by the Ministry of Health, were a pledge by the Law and Justice (PiS) party ahead of last year’s parliamentary elections, which it won in a landslide.

The free drugs will have to be prescribed by a primary care doctor.

The government programme is aimed at helping pensioners, many of whom cannot afford to buy all the drugs prescribed to them by their physician. (tf/pk)
