Number of alcohol addicts in Hungary could go up to one million
Budapest, January (MTI) – The number of alcohol addicts in Hungary could go up to one million from the current 800,000 within a couple of years, toxicologist Gabor Zacher said on Sunday. Drinking as an issue affects almost all families one way or the other since there are 30,000 people who die of an alcohol related illness in the country each year and another 2.5 million with the drive to take in excessive amounts, he told public television’s channel M1. What qualifies one as an alcoholic is not the amount one drinks but the extent to which drinking overwhelms one’s day to day life as a habit, Zacher said.
What adds to the problem is that Hungary does not have a comprehensive strategy to combat alcoholism nor a psychological assistance programme aimed at prevention, he said. The causes of alcoholism, as well as prescription drug addiction have deep roots in society and need to be addressed in prevention, Zacher told the programme.
