Some 520,000 people in Bulgaria have type 1 or type 2 diabetes
Mariana Aleksandrova, chair of the Diabetes, Prediabetes and Metabolism Association, spoke Wednesday in an interview with FOCUS News Agency, touching upon burning issues.“Some 520,000 people in Bulgaria have type 1 or type 2 diabetes. It is considered those unaware of having the metabolic disorder number over 220,000,” Ms Aleksandrova said.She specified there were some symptoms typical both of type 1 and type 2 diabetes, such as excessive thirst and frequent urination.
The specialist explained things in type 1 diabetes developed in a much more dramatic way.“If a child is weak, sleepy and lacks strength and his or her parents fail to take him or her to the doctor in several days, hyperglycemia may be seen or the child may faint. It is usually established in such medical examinations the child has blood sugar problems,” Mariana Aleksandrova said further.In her words, symptoms may for 5 to 6 years in cases of type 2 diabetes and this is in fact the major problem.“About 75,000 people [in Bulgaria] receive over 2 insulin injections daily and those who get insulin treatment are some 100,000,” Mariana Aleksandrova went on to say.
