Retrial ordered for hungarian homebirth midwife

The Municipal Court of Appeal has ordered a retrial in the case of homebirth midwife Ágnes Geréb. The gynaecologist had been sentenced for two years in prison in 2012 for four cases in which she assisted with home births, Geréb’s lawyer said on Monday. Gábor Papp said the court will retry the case after an investigation was launched last summer to clarify the discrepancy between two expert opinions, one of which had established negligence and the other, which had not. Papp said he believed his client should be acquitted based on the latter opinion.

Geréb, the pioneer of homebirths in Hungary, was found guilty of professional negligence in 2012. She had been arrested in 2010 and held under house arrest until February 2014, when it was lifted under a restriction of movement order.
