Forty percent of Flemings have trouble sleeping
More than four in 10 Flemings (42%) are dissatisfied with their sleep patterns, and 30% feel they have sleep disorders, according to a survey by the Christian Mutuality (CM) among 3,300 of its members.
The survey has resulted in other worrying statistics as well: More than one in four surveyed said they have trouble concentrating during the day, and 13% often feel tired when sitting behind the wheel of their car. Of the respondents who said to be dissatisfied with their sleep, 74% often feel tired throughout the whole day.
“We lead hasty lives with over-full agendas,” said Griet Rummens, head of the CM department in charge of promoting healthy living. “We are surfing on the internet until late in the evening in order to not miss anything, but this costs us sleep.”
This lack of sleep leads to tiredness, concentration problems and irritability during the day but also makes people less resistant to illness, she said.
The survey also highlighted several myths about a proper night’s sleep, including the idea that alcohol before bed helps you sleep better. One-quarter of the survey respondents said they drink at least one glass of alcohol in the hour before going to bed. “It may help you to get to sleep more quickly, but will also cause you to wake up during the night,” said Rummens.
CM’s Slaapwel platform aims to clear up the misunderstandings and provide tips for a good night’s sleep. The mutuality has launched an online sleep test where users can ascertain their sleep profiles and get advice. The CM is also distributing a free booklet and organises info sessions and workshops on the subject.
