Hospital forced to chain children’s toys to beds because thieves are stealing them
Thieves have been stealing the toys from sick and dying children in hospital, forcing staff to take extreme measures to stop them being taken.
Toys have had to be chained to beds in Newport’s Royal Gwent Hospital as a spate of thefts have occurred throughout the building.
Even ill children have been the victims of these thefts, with two-year-old Soren finding his playthings have been secured to his bed with a bike lock to stop them going missing.
His dad, 49-year-old Dean Beddis said: ‘These toys are there for kids who are seriously ill, they’re provided by the hospital and people are stealing them.
‘I was shocked to see that a children’s toy had a bike lock on it attaching it to the cot.’
Mr Beddis also claimed that TVs had been stolen from patient waiting rooms.
A spokesman from the hospital admitted ‘we do get toys and games taken from our hospitals’.
They added: ‘It is not a regular occurrence but we do encourage staff to secure and lock away some of the more popular and more expensive items.’
The hospital is investigating the thefts, and have reassured patients that all wards are monitored by CCTV at all times.
