The campaign against smoking is extended from bars to parks
European governments are extending the ban on smoking to outdoor locations, such as bus stops, playgrounds and public gardens. The campaign began recently in Sweden, where the powerful Agency for Health has advised the government to take steps urgently in view of the fact that experts in Stockholm say that passive smoking is responsible for hundreds of cases of lung and cardiovascular diseases.
Few administrations in Europe would disagree with this and currently in the news is that the Health Commission of the city of London has asked the mayor, Boris Johnson, to make Trafalgar Square, Parliament Square and 25,000 acres of parks in the City areas where smoking is prohibited, with the declared objective of transforming the English capital into the healthiest city in the world – apart from the smog.
