Serbia Facing Lack Of Doctors
Serbia Facing Lack Of Doctors
BELGRADE – Since the beginning of 2013, 650 Serbian doctors tried to find a job abroad. They are mostly young doctors waiting for a job, but also specialists.
Medical Chamber of Serbia warns that something has to be done in order to stop the departure of doctors, because the analysis has shown that more than 60% of doctors specialists are older than 55 years. In the next seven to ten years they will retire and health centers will be left without these experts. The director of Medical Chamber of Serbia, Tatjana Radosavljevic, said for Tanjug that 650 doctors requested certification of good practise, necessary for employment abroad. She could not specify if all of them actually went abroad, but she said that if they are determined, they will find a way to get a job abroad. She also said that Serbian health system is already lacking specialists – pathologists, anesthesiologists, radiologists, and pediatricians and cardiologists will also become scarce, she warned. Currently, in the evidence of the National Employment Service 2,387 doctors are listed as unemployed, among whom are 66 specialists.
She suggested that systematic solutions should be sought, and that voluntary specialisations should be reinstated. She also suggested the country should make national strategy to stop the departure of young doctors. She reminded that this problem also has Poland. The country stayed without 6,000 doctors in less than 3 months after joining EU.
She also said that migrations of doctors are issue in other countries, as doctors from Germany leave for England and the U.S. to work, so the space is opened in these countries for employment people from other countries. Croatia is facing lack of doctors also, she added.
